Using TENS Units to Relieve Pain
In order for patients to be able to derive the most benefit from using TENS units, it is imperative that they learn how to use them properly. The Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, or TENS unit, is convenient and easy to carry with you just about anywhere. In fact, this small battery powered device can even be carried in your pocket for use on the go.
A TENS unit is beneficial in helping to relieve pain from an accident or surgical procedure. Additionally, the TENS unit can also be applied to areas of chronic pain caused by cancer and other types of disease in order to provide pain relief. In fact, even patients who have difficulties taking traditional pain medication can derive excellent benefits from the use of one of these units. For anyone suffering from pain, an investment in a TENS unit offers a convenient pain management solution.
The TENS unit sends electrical impulses through sticky patches that are applied to your skin. The wires from the unit allow electrical impulses to transmit to a patient’s nerves. These signals trigger the brain to respond with a tingling feeling as opposed to pain. In essence, the pain is transformed into a completely different feeling and the patient experiences pain relief.
The electrodes are placed according to a patient’s needs. This is determined by the intensity of the pain they are experiencing, as well as where the pain is located. The electrodes can be placed to handle post surgical pain, or to relieve joint pain or muscle spasms. The patches can be positioned in a variety of ways in order to provide the best possible pain relief; however, it is important to not place patches or electrodes on your neck.
Arthritis pain can be treated effectively in a relatively short period of time, either 3 to 4 hours of treatment or 3 to5 days, depending on the severity and individual circumstances. It is not unusual for a patient who has a limb amputated to experience pain for a period of time. This pain can be treated at home. A thorough medical consultation is important when determining the correct pain management techniques.
Proper Use of a TENS Unit
Prior to beginning a treatment with your TENS unit, be sure that the batteries are fully charged. This will ensure that you are able to complete your treatment without any interruptions. The unit has two control knobs used for adjustments of the electrical impulses. One of these knobs will adjust the intensity of the electrical signals. The other knob controls the speed. It is important to ensure that both knobs are in the off position before you begin your treatment.
Additionally, preparing the skin properly before treatment is important. Make sure the area is cleaned with alcohol. Place a little gel on the bottom of the patch. The gel will help transmit the electrical impulses.
